Sump Pumps
Wichita's spring storm season brings some of the heaviest rainfall in Kansas, and many homes in lower-lying areas of Sedgwick County are at real risk of basement or crawl space flooding when drainage cannot keep pace with heavy rain. A properly functioning sump pump is the last line of defense between that water and your finished basement, appliances, HVAC equipment, and stored belongings.
Benjamin Franklin Plumbing of Wichita has served the Wichita area for over 70 years and has installed and serviced sump pumps from every major manufacturer. Our licensed plumbers install new sump pump systems, replace failed units with same-day service, and add backup pump systems to protect against the two most common failure scenarios: pump failure and power outage during a storm.

If your Wichita home does not have a sump pump and your basement or crawl space has a history of moisture intrusion, installing one is one of the most effective investments you can make to protect the structure and your belongings. A sump pump system consists of a sump pit dug into the lowest point of the basement floor, a pump seated in the pit, and a discharge line that carries the collected water away from the foundation.
Our plumbers assess your basement's drainage pattern, recommend the right pump size and type for your home's needs, and install the complete system including the pit liner, pump, discharge line, and check valve. We also verify that the discharge line terminates at the correct distance from the foundation to prevent the pumped water from draining back.
A sump pump that runs continuously, fails to turn on, turns on but does not discharge water, or makes unusual grinding or rattling noises needs service before the next storm season. Common repair issues include a stuck or failed float switch, a clogged or frozen discharge line, a failed check valve that allows water to flow back into the pit after each cycle, and a burned-out motor.
Our plumbers diagnose the specific failure and repair or replace the affected component. In many cases a sump pump repair is completed in a single visit. If the pump is near the end of its service life -- most residential sump pumps last 7 to 10 years -- we discuss replacement options with you as part of the service call.
When a sump pump has failed completely, is beyond practical repair, or has reached the end of its expected service life, replacement is the right call. We stock submersible and pedestal sump pumps from major manufacturers including Zoeller, Wayne, Little Giant, Liberty, Flotec, and Basement Watchdog, in a range of horsepower ratings for different basement sizes and water volumes.
Submersible pumps sit inside the pit below water level, operate more quietly, and are generally preferred for finished basements where noise is a concern. Pedestal pumps have the motor mounted above the pit on a stand, are easier to service, and tend to have a longer motor life. Our plumbers will recommend the right type and size for your specific basement and drainage situation.
The primary sump pump fails at the worst possible moment: during a major storm when the power goes out and the water is rising fastest. A backup sump pump is an independent system that activates when the primary pump fails or the water level rises above the primary pump's capacity.
We install two types of backup sump pumps:
We carry and install both types and will explain the advantages and trade-offs of each before you decide.

Every Wichita homeowner with a sump pump should test it before spring storm season, which typically runs from March through June. Pour a bucket of water slowly into the sump pit. The pump should activate as the water level rises, discharge the water through the outlet pipe, and shut off when the pit is emptied. If it does not activate, or activates but does not discharge, call us before the storms arrive.
Also check: the outlet pipe runs fully to its exterior termination point and is not blocked, the check valve on the discharge line prevents water from flowing back into the pit after the pump cycles off, and any backup pump system is charged and ready if battery-powered.

Most residential sump pumps last 7 to 10 years with normal use. Pumps in homes with high water table or frequent cycling may wear out sooner. Cast iron pumps generally last longer than plastic-bodied units. If your pump is approaching or past 10 years old, have it inspected before it fails during a storm.
A submersible pump sits inside the pit below the water level with the motor sealed inside a waterproof housing. It is quieter and handles higher volumes of water. A pedestal pump has the motor mounted above the pit on a stand, which makes the motor easier to access for service and keeps it away from water exposure, potentially extending motor life. For finished basements, submersible is usually preferred for its quieter operation.
If your home depends on a sump pump to stay dry, a backup is strongly recommended. The two scenarios where a primary pump fails most often are exactly the situations where you need it most: power outages during major storms, and pump failure from overwork during sustained heavy rain. A backup system costs a fraction of what a basement flood costs in water damage, mold remediation, and lost belongings.
The cost depends on the type of pump, whether a pit already exists, and whether a backup system is being added. We always provide a complete upfront price before any work begins. Call (316) 768-8374 for a same-day estimate.
